From Strategy to Storytelling: Supporting CECE During Its 20-Year Milestone
When I first walked into the offices of CECE—The College of Early Childhood Educators—it wasn’t just another contract. It was the heart of a profession that shapes the earliest years of human life. CECE is Ontario’s self-regulatory body for Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs). They oversee licensing, establish professional standards, enforce ethical practice, and elevate the profession of early learning through accountability and advocacy. This year marked a milestone: CECE’s 20th anniversary—a celebration of two decades of dedication to children, families, and the professionals who nurture them.
I joined the Communications and Stakeholder Relations team during a moment of transition. One team member was on maternity leave and another was preparing for hers. With a major anniversary celebration underway and ongoing regulatory communications to manage, the College needed support to keep its voice strong and consistent. That’s where I came in—stepping in for a two-month project as the Communications & Stakeholder Relations Coordinator.
Crafting the College’s Digital Voice
My first task was to bring structure and strategy to CECE’s digital communications. I created the social media content calendar in English and coordinated with the French translator to ensure every post was delivered bilingually across LinkedIn, Meta (Facebook & Instagram), Twitter, and YouTube. Using Hootsuite, I scheduled posts that highlighted educator milestones, regulatory updates, professional development opportunities, and 20-year celebration content.
Staying Informed, Keeping Others Informed
Every morning began with Meltwater. I monitored national and international news, policy updates, and sector-relevant articles related to Early Childhood Educators. I filtered and shared the stories internally with staff—categorized into CECE-specific, industry-related, and global news—so that the organization stayed ahead, informed, and responsive.
Building Connection Through Communication
Beyond social media, my role involved strengthening relationships with both educators and the broader community. I coordinated professional webinars for RECEs and facilitated speaker requests from the College. I drafted press releases for media outlets on new policies, court hearings, and regulatory decisions—ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with CECE’s brand and regulatory standards.
For our members, I worked through Mailchimp to help develop newsletters—sharing professional updates, events, policy changes, and inspiring educator stories. Each piece of content aimed to affirm the value of the profession while keeping RECEs informed and engaged.
Behind the Communications Title
Though my time with CECE was brief, it was immersive. My responsibilities aligned closely with the core job description of a Communications & Stakeholder Relations Coordinator:
- Supporting the annual communications and stakeholder relations plan
- Developing multi-channel content and key message frameworks
- Working collaboratively across departments to manage projects and timelines
- Monitoring analytics to refine communication strategies
- Ensuring every message upheld CECE’s standards for accuracy, ethics, and inclusivity
What I Took Away
Working with CECE wasn’t just about scheduling posts or writing newsletters—it was about being the voice behind a profession that rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. I learned how communications in a regulatory environment blend precision with empathy. Every message matters. Every word has purpose.
And in those two months, as CECE celebrated 20 years of advocacy and excellence, I felt deeply connected to a mission much greater than mine: supporting the educators who help raise the next generation.
