Launching Muslin in Mumbai: A Boutique Moment in Luxury Interiors
PR Management Associate | ActiMedia
In 2008, Mumbai’s design landscape was transforming. Lower Parel was emerging as the city’s most exciting luxury destination — where heritage mill compounds were being reimagined as hubs for fashion, art, and interiors. It was within this cultural shift that I was entrusted with launching Muslin’s boutique at the iconic Raghuvanshi Mills Compound.
Setting the Stage
Muslin, founded by Deepi Singh, was already known in Delhi’s design circles for its refined aesthetic — timeless textiles, thoughtful textures, and a bespoke approach to soft furnishings. The Mumbai launch marked a significant milestone: introducing a capital-favourite luxury home brand to the country’s entertainment and design capital.
The boutique opened its doors on July 30, 2008, at Raghuvanshi Estate — then considered the epicentre of high-end interior and lifestyle brands. The store’s concept embodied Muslin’s philosophy: understated elegance layered with craftsmanship. Cotton, silk, linen, velvet, jacquards — each textile curated not just as fabric, but as an experience.
And at the heart of the store stood its showstopper.
A levitating bed — suspended from four sturdy metal ropes like a swing — floated mid-space, dressed in Muslin’s finest bedding collections. It wasn’t just a display piece; it was a statement. It invited editors, designers, and tastemakers to imagine textiles as art in motion.
Crafting the Narrative
My role went beyond logistics — it was about storytelling.
I led:
- Media outreach and press invitations
- Strategic RSVP management to ensure high-value attendance
- Press release drafting and pitch notes
- Spokesperson profiles and curated press kits
- On-ground coordination during the launch event
- Post-event follow-ups to secure product placements and editorial mentions
The goal was clear: position Muslin not merely as a store opening, but as a noteworthy entrant into Mumbai’s luxury interiors conversation.
A Star-Studded Inauguration
The boutique was inaugurated
by celebrated actress Urmila Matondkar and renowned fashion designer Manish Malhotra, drawing significant media and industry attention. Their presence reinforced Muslin’s alignment with India’s fashion-forward, design-conscious elite.
Editors from leading interior, lifestyle, and business publications attended — and the follow-through became just as important as the event itself.
Securing Coverage & Building Momentum
Post-launch, my focus shifted to sustaining visibility. This included:
- Ensuring product listings in décor round-ups
- Securing inclusion in trend stories and festive home features
- Pitching Muslin as an expert voice in conversations around luxury textiles
- Maintaining relationships with design journalists and stylists
Around that time, Muslin was recognized in prominent design features and lifestyle conversations, noted for its curated collections and bespoke sensibility. It quickly became a recommended boutique among architects and interior designers within Mumbai’s premium segment.
Beyond the Launch
Although the Mumbai store eventually closed for reasons unrelated to the PR efforts, Muslin continued to thrive as a luxury home destination. Its flagship presence in New Delhi reinforced its reputation as a premier brand for bespoke soft furnishings, draperies, and curated home interiors.
What This Launch Represented for Me
This project was formative. It sharpened my ability to:
- Launch a luxury brand in a competitive metropolitan market
- Translate brand philosophy into media narratives
- Balance celebrity presence with design credibility
- Drive sustained editorial momentum beyond the event day
Launching Muslin in Mumbai wasn’t just about opening doors — it was about anchoring a Delhi-born luxury textile house into the cultural fabric of India’s design capital.
And for me, it marked the beginning of understanding how powerful storytelling, strategic positioning, and thoughtful media relations can turn a boutique opening into a brand moment.
